TikTok CPMs rose broadly across 2025-2026, but Spark Ads (boosting creators' organic posts) can typically come in below the average in-feed CPM — if you pick the right creators and assets. This execution checklist collects common practitioner rules of thumb — test each one on a small budget in your own account, since results vary a lot by vertical.

1. Don't pick creators by follower count — use "avg engagement rate of last 6 videos"

A 500K-follower creator isn't necessarily worth more than a 50K one. A common rule of thumb: high-engagement micro-creators (10k-100k) often deliver better Spark Ads returns than million-follower creators. Bigger creators have messier audiences — wide top of funnel but narrow bottom.

How to check: visit creator profile → look at last 6 videos → avg of (likes+comments+shares) / views. Below 4% → skip, regardless of follower count.

2. The first 3 seconds drive most of the retention

Audit every Spark Ad video's first 3 seconds: is there a visual hook (person on screen / high contrast / surprise frame / text impact)? One thing worth A/B-testing: add a 0.5s "⚠️ heads up" text sticker in the first 3 seconds, then compare the two versions’ 3-second retention and ROAS.

3. CTA timing: start testing at 8-12 seconds

Too early (< 5s) and viewers bail before building interest; too late (> 20s) and half have already swiped. A common starting point is a CTA around the 8-12s mark; A/B-test from there to find the best spot for your own creative.

4. Video length: start testing at 18-25 seconds

< 15s: high retention but low conversion (not enough info). > 35s: completion rate drops off a cliff. 18-25 seconds is usually the bucket worth testing first — it fits hook → pain → demo → CTA cleanly.

5. Spread across 5-10 similar creators, don't bet on 1-2 stars

Putting most of your budget on a single million-follower creator is risky — when TikTok's algorithm shifts, the whole account takes the hit. Matrix strategy: find 5-10 mid-tier creators in the same niche (10k-200k followers), give each 10-20% of budget.

6. Use Custom Audiences for retargeting

By default Spark Ads target cold traffic. Re-run the same video targeting "website visited / cart abandoned / opened app in last 7d" audiences and conversion rates are usually higher and cost per conversion lower — how much varies by vertical and account.

  • Step 1: upload customer email list to TikTok Audience Manager
  • Step 2: use Pixel to build website-visit / cart-abandoner audiences
  • Step 3: clone your top Spark Ad into a new ad group, target these audiences

7. Force creative refresh every 14 days

Spark Ads creative fatigues quickly: the usual signs on a long-running ad are rising CPM and falling conversion rate. Hard rule: rotate at least 1/3 of creatives every 14 days, full refresh every 30 days.

Where DEXUN AdWhiz helps

#1 and #5: use TikTok creator discovery to shortlist creators by category and follower count — still check engagement rate yourself as described above. For the rest: once your TikTok account is connected, AI recommendations use each campaign's last 7 days of spend, conversions and ROAS to flag laggards and suggest budget moves; the creative calls (hook, length, CTA timing, when to refresh) are still yours. AdWhiz recommends — you decide what changes.
